In the last blog I spoke about chronobiology and your natural biological rhythms.
Why marching to the beat of your own rhythm is so much better for you than just doing what everyone else does.
Following on from that, today I wanted to talk about how to set up a morning routine that gets your day started right.
Sleep is the best thing since sliced bread – mmmm I love fresh sliced bread – but I’m getting distracted……
At some point we have to get up and get on with our day, but what’s the best way for you?
At this point, you’re most likely waiting for me to give you the one ultimate way, the magic pill to start your day healthily and happily…
I’m not going to do that, because I’m not an asshole.
Right now, I can’t tell you the best way to start your day because I don’t know you yet.
I don’t know your circumstances, your biology, what you want to achieve in life, what your goals are, so I can’t give you personal advice.
It would be completely remiss, and actually detrimental to your health and wellbeing, if like most coaches, I started giving generalised advice of the ‘do what I do’ cos it worked for me variety.
Sure a few of you would create your ideal morning, get epic results and feel a massive change in your energy, but most of you wouldn’t…
because your biology, your lifestyle and your goals are different from mine.
With that in mind, here’s a tip…
Write down what your ultimate morning would look like if you were free from all outside influences, time constraints and obligations to others.
Imagine if you could get up when you liked, start the day in a way that would make you feel good.
Would you lie in bed and read for a while? Head out to your favourite gym class? Relax in the kitchen creating a nice breakfast for the family? Would you curl up in a chair with your favourite coffee and plan out your day?
Maybe think back to a time in your life when you didn’t have so much on your plate, what were your morning habits then?
What worked, or what didn’t?
When you remove all the outside noise, your body is always sending you feedback of what feels good, and what doesn’t.
You just have to learn to listen.
My challenge to you is to pick one small thing that you could do just for yourself in the morning, one small thing that would help you to start the day in a good way, that will help you to feel good and take you one step closer to creating your ultimate morning.
Next you’ll need to create a plan to make sure you do it…
Every day!
Perhaps you set your alarm just 5 minutes earlier so you can have your first coffee in peace, or you might leave your sneakers by the bed so you can go for a walk around the block while your partner makes breakfast.
One thing I want to emphasise is that starting your day right, being healthier, isn’t always about big grand changes.
It’s about small consistent behaviours that have you starting the day in a way that’s energising for you…
and doesn’t have to be complicated, it doesn’t mean you have to get up an hour earlier and hit the gym either, you just need accountability to stay consistent with actions that help you feel good about yourself.
You know that starting your day right, sets the tone for the rest of the day, you don’t need me to tell you that.
But you may not know that your ideal morning may change with the seasons, and will likely change over time, just as you do
Compare the days you start feeling in control, to the days where you oversleep and start your day stressed from the second you open your eyes.
If there’s one thing I’ve learned over the last few years, it’s to listen to my body, and stay curious.
If you want to continue feeling average, starting your day being dictated to by your inbox, in a whirlwind of demands from others then continue doing the same old thing.
But if you want to start every day fizzing with energy, with a smile on your face and ready to face the world on your terms then please book a free call with me – I can help you rebel against average to feel alive and thrive.
