Based on a chat I had this week with a client, the first morning back in level 4 lockdown, I figure I needed to take a moment to emphasize the importance of being able to take a step back, walk away from your business or job for 20 – 30 minutes and centre yourself.

I know it sounds completely counterintuitive to so many of us, who on hearing of yet another lockdown instantly go into panic mode. Let’s be honest as a business owner and a parent, often our thoughts are immediately drawn to all the things we must do, all the negatives, financial implications, logistics for everyone being home, and stress levels rise instantly.

It has to be said though, that successful people recognise the importance of good mental health and if there’s one thing you take away from this, just know that your health is everything and the detrimental effects of long term stress are very real.

Taking 20 – 30 minutes to go for a walk, get the body moving, get some blood flowing and let yourself appreciate 2 or 3 things in life that you’re grateful for, will prove  SO much more beneficial to your day, than worrying about taking a few minutes away from your to-do list.

All those tasks will still be there 20 minutes later but the clarity you gain from giving yourself a break will increase your performance, focus and ability to stay calm under pressure. Far more so than turning to alcohol, stimulants or telling yourself that you can’t afford to step away at all.

Do yourself a favour this lockdown, be kind to yourself, give yourself a break and know that where your focus goes, energy flows. If you focus on the positives, you’ll create more positives. If you focus on the negatives, you’ll find that negative situations and outcomes are drawn to you.

Stay safe and well!
